1/22/10 - Open Letter from The RSF Democratic Club President

Members of the Rancho Santa Fe Democratic Club,

As the new President of the Club, I would like to thank all of our past Board Members for their fantastic service.  Last year was often challenging as we got the club started and had to figure out so much from scratch.  This year promises to provide some exciting meetings with fascinating speakers, more candidate endorsements, crucial activities to get out the vote, and hopefully some important issue advocacy.  Please continue your involvement, and if you are inclined, join one of our committees and help us continue to improve the club and further our agenda.  If you indicated interest through our web site last year, please do it again.  We promise to respond to you.

Yesterday two amazing political events occurred.  The first is that Speaker Pelosi announced that she didn’t have the votes to pass Health Care legislation.  I would have liked to see her facilitate forcing the Republicans to filibuster the legislation.  Then it would be clear that the Republicans killed Healthcare.  Now, it just looks like a failure by the Democrats. The other massively far-reaching thing that happened is that the Supreme Court ruled that corporations have the same rights to free speech as individuals and thus a virtually unlimited right to spend money on political activities.  This essentially means that special interests can rule our country.

What can be done about healthcare and the implications of unrestrained corporate political spending?  These are just a sample of the issues we will be discussing this year, with political candidates, politicians, and amongst ourselves as our club develops policy advocacy positions. We need your input.  Become active in the club, renew your membership, and invite friends to join.  We’ll help our country, and have some fun at the same time.

Michael Gelfand

President RSF Dem Club

1/15/10 - Rancho Santa Fe Democratic Club Endorsement

At the club Annual meeting on 1/14/10 the club membership voted to formally endorse Democratic Candidate Francine Busby for the 50th district congressional race.  Congratulations Francine!
